Gambia College suspends staff over alleged rape attempt
The Gambia College has suspended Alasana Janneh, an admin assistant over the alleged rape attempt on a female student at his office last month.
On September 24, a Malagen investigation exposed how Janneh, 32, who is responsible for entering grades for students at diploma primary level at the college, lured the 22-year-old student at his office at night and tried to force sex with her in exchange for entering her grades.
Three days later, he appeared before Brikama Magistrates Court presided by Magistrate A.B Faal, and was charged with assault and abduction.
Janneh appeared in court without a lawyer. He denied any wrongdoing, and was granted bail on a bond of D150, 000 and two Gambian sureties. He has been ordered to refrain from talking to his alleged victim. The case resumes on October 19.
“A decision was made to suspend Janneh pending the outcome of his court case,” Aboucarr Jallow, the principal of the Gambia College, told Malagen on Friday.
“All the grades he was handling are also being reviewed by the College’s School of Education. It could be that somebody could have benefited from it.”
The issue of missing grades is a common issue at the Gambia College. Several students complained to Malagen about their missing grades.
It is rare for institutions in Gambia to have a sexual harassment policy. Though the College claimed to have one, its registrar Mr Yarbo who promised to send it since last week has failed to share it with Malagen until the time of this publication. However, their staff code of conduct has frowns upon “bullying”, “harassment” or any forms of “discrimination.”
